The Golden Visa is a long-term residence permit, issued for five or ten years and renewable, that does not require an employer or a sponsor.

It also does not require you to stay in the UAE continuously to keep it, which is the practical reason most international founders want it.

Property investors

Ownership of UAE real estate at or above the published investment threshold supports a long-term residence application. The property must be held in the applicant's name, and off-plan or mortgaged property can qualify subject to conditions set by the land department and the lender.

Multiple properties can be combined to reach the threshold in most emirates, which is the route many investors take.

Entrepreneurs and business owners

Founders of a UAE-registered company with an approved economic value, or owners of an existing project with sufficient audited revenue, can apply through the entrepreneur route. Approval typically requires endorsement from an accredited business incubator or the relevant economic department.

This is the route where preparation matters most. The file is assessed on the substance of the business, not simply the existence of a licence.

Specialised talent

Doctors, scientists, engineers, senior executives, specialists in AI and priority technical fields, and recognised figures in culture and sport can be nominated under the talent categories. Most talent routes require a recognised qualification, a salary above a stated level, and a letter of support from the relevant UAE authority.

Outstanding students and graduates

High-performing students at accredited UAE universities, and graduates of top-ranked international universities meeting the grade criteria, can qualify for long-term residence, with dependants included.

What the visa gives you

The practical benefits are consistent across categories:

  • Five or ten year renewable residence with no employer sponsor
  • Sponsorship of spouse, children and, in several categories, parents
  • No requirement to hold a UAE job offer
  • Residence is not cancelled by extended time spent outside the UAE
  • Ability to sponsor domestic staff, subject to the usual quotas

How the application runs

In outline: eligibility assessment, document collection and attestation, nomination or endorsement where the category requires it, submission to the relevant authority, medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics, then issuance and stamping.

The most common cause of rejection is not ineligibility. It is a file submitted under the wrong category, or without the endorsement that category requires.
